And under these conditions, when food is plentiful, you will eventually run out of willpower.
And when you eventually give into temptation, how do feel afterwards? Guilty, right? Like you've done something wrong.
These diets and weight loss programs don't work because they trigger states of scarcity and deprivation, and by doing so, they are working against our brain and body.
As a result of this INHERENT FLAW in their strategy, what is required to succeed is unsustainable.
As a matter of fact, after reviewing 31 long-term studies on the effectiveness of dieting, a team of UCLA researchers concluded that dieting is a consistent predictor of weight gain—up to two-thirds of the people regained more weight than they lost (Mann 2007).
It’s also not about joining a gym and exercising more.
Let me be clear. As a personal trainer and health club owner, I believe movement is essential for health, but the primary benefits are not weight loss.
The benefits include cardiovascular fitness, building and preserving muscle, flexibility and functional movement, and mental health.
Moderate exercise has also been shown to help with depression, stress management, and strengthening willpower.
And of course, exercise has a positive effect on your metabolism and can increase insulin sensitivity.
But the root cause of weight gain is not a sedentary lifestyle. It’s overeating – as in consuming more calories than you use.
With diets and fitness challenges, we approach weight loss as a project and we usually want to complete the project as fast a possible.
But when we approach this way, what happens? We put our regular life on hold. We set aside time, and then we go "all in."
This "all or nothing approach" takes us way outside our comfort zone, and our brain slams on the brakes.
Lastly, when you catch yourself thinking and believing, "I'll be happy when I lose the weight," it's no wonder you want to lose the weight as quickly as possible! But you've actually attached your happiness and made it dependent on an outcome you can't control.
Stepping on the scale and hitting your goal weight is not the answer. The solution is actually the opposite. The root of so much suffering is our attachment to outcomes.
These are all things that simply don't work.
