#62: Comfort Food and Stress

Mar 29, 2021

How Are You Feeling?

So how would you rate your stress level in this past month?

And when you feel upset or worried or anxious, is comfort food one of your “go to” methods for coping with it?

If you find yourself feeling guilty afterwards, let me just say I don’t think it helps anyone to divide the world into “good” and “bad” things, and comfort eating is no exception.

At the same time, it’s probably worth it to try combating the sources of stress that are kicking off this process to begin with and finding better ways to cope with stress that are kinder to your waistline and healthier for you.

Tips For Coping With Stress

It's important to understand that stress or emotional eating is a habit. At some point in time, you learned that eating provided some temporary relief when you're feel bored or upset. On a biological level, eating triggers the release of dopamine - a happy hormone. But it doesn't solve the underlying cause of the stress. Therein lies the problem.

The good news.  Habits can be broken.  We want to interrupt the pattern - the connection of stress as the trigger and food as the solution.

If you're feeling stressed and eating comfort food is your "go to" method of coping with it, but you want to figure out better ways to do so that are healthier and kinder to your waistline, this is one episode you don't want to miss.

In this episode, Amy discusses how comfort food works, the effects of the stress hormone cortisol and ways to combat the sources of stress that are kicking off this process.
