#68: Dealing With Disappointment

May 10, 2021

Do you look forward to big days like Mother's Day and your birthday - when loved ones let you know how special you are?

Or do you find yourself preparing to be let down?

If you have to brace yourself for disappointment...

How about we try something different so your next "big day" can be a wish come true?

Preparing for disappointment and feeling resentful when family either forgets or minimizes the big day like Mother’s Day or your birthday is an option.

But preparing for disappointment means this has happened before so it's time to ask yourself why you would allow this to continue, especially If you feel resentment.

Because as Carrie Fisher put it, “Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."

So here’s what I suggest you do instead.

Communicate what you do want.

As you read this, do you find a part of you resisting? If yes, I want you to again ask yourself why?

Based on my experience, it really boils down to fear.

It can be as simple as me suggesting you do something you haven’t done before… and this takes you out of your comfort zone.

Perhaps you were taught you should be grateful for what you get. Perhaps you don't really know what you want.

Or perhaps no one has ever suggested that you can express what you want, even negotiate for what you want. Well, you now have my permission. Go for it!

Here are the steps you can use to overcome the fears:

  1. Know your love language.
  2. Get clarity on what you want.
  3. Communicate clearly
  4. Detach from outcome
  5. Focus on learning

In my latest podcast, I unpack each of these steps. My hope for you is that going forward, by using this process, special days like Mother’s Day and your birthday and other big days will be the BEST EVER.

Questions on any of these steps?  Please ask away. 😉
